When Group A was made the top-level rally regulation following the discontinuation of Group B, Rasputin Motors' motorsports division got the idea to convert a number of their three-door Sirin hatchbacks into rally cars for competition, designated the Alkonost-A.

With an FWD drivetrain, a 1,288.5cc Inline-4 making 100 bhp at 7,200 rpm with a double carburettor, and a 900 kg weight rating, it was ready to take on the Group A/5 division. From 1986 to 1998, they were mostly used by private teams, without much success, whether placing low or getting DNF'd.

Rasputin had also developed two versions of the Alkonost-A for the Group A/6 class. The first version, with a newer 1,500cc engine making 120 to 130 bhp, was active from 1988 to 1991, after which they introduced the second version, which has a larger 1,580cc engine that is even more powerful at 135 to 141 bhp. The second version of the Alkonost-A/6 rally car was active until 2001, after which it was retired without much fanfare. The A/6 versions of the Alkonost-A did not fare much better than the older A/5 version.

Despite not having been as successful as certain other Group A rally cars, Mash did see potential in them. When the M.R.A. invited Rasputin Motors to participate in the Pandrosia MotorStorm Festival and they accepted, Mash bought up a number of unsold Alkonost-As and had the mechanics modify them to endure the fierce and gritty racing events of the Festival.

Trivia[]

  • It is visually inspired by Group A/5 and A/6 rally cars based on the Lada Samara, but with the headlights of a 1983 Citroen CX, and the taillights of a 1987 Fiat 126 hatchback.
