Nova Fernweh WRC

Based on the Fernweh RS hatchback, the Fernweh WRC was developed as the successor to the Zeitgeist.

The wheel arches were widened to the maximum permissible width of 1,770mm to accommodate wider tires and a larger wheelbase on both axes, the floorpan was modified to allow the installation of an AWD drivetrain, a large central tunnel forms carries the rear-wheel drive shaft and a robust heat-insulated exhaust pipe, and the front windshield and side windows are electrically heated to allow good visibility for the driver under all climatic conditions. The fuel tanks have a capacity of 90 litres. Of course, the aerodynamic elements were modified from the Fernweh RS, a result of extensive and meticulous wind tunnel testing.

The 300bhp DOHC I-4 engine is based on the powerplant used in the Zeitgeist, destroked to 1,999cc with five valves per cylinder and a single Barrett turbo along with an anti-lag system and a 36mm air restrictor. The drivetrain is a Ztrak six-speed sequential with semi-automatic gear shift and three electronically-controlled active diffs, along with a carbon triple-plate clutch.

From 2003 to 2006, the Fernweh WRC was raced to varying results, usually taking 9th or 8th place at best and placing lower or even suffering a parts failure or posting a DNF at worst. Not exactly the most successful World Rally Car, even with the Evo 2 model coming along. Most notably, legendary Scottish rallying driver Calvin McKay had driven the Fernweh WRC in his last-ever rallying season. Its best result was 6th place in France in 2005.
